Proper Summers Day

Handful of Raspberry Goodness!

Well – last night I put the fire on because it was cold.
Today I think I got a bit sunburned… πŸ™‚

Anyway – perfect day to be outside getting a few of the jobs ticked off the list.

Lost the path

Since the snowball bush (Gilder rose) has finished flowering we thought it time to cut back some of it to clear the pathway again

I wasn’t doing a good job here so I got fired and moved on to power tools and sorting out some of the fence palings!! πŸ™‚

Wanted to turn all of Ruby’s old fence into kindling for next season. I cut them all into reasonable lengths, then split them by hand.

My high-tech wood splitting tools

Meanwhile:

Clear path

Jeff finished up path maintenance and came to help me split some wood, when the second stray dog in the last couple of weeks came in to visit!!

A beautiful (but grubby and hungry) border collie. Jeff got her some water. I found her a lamb bone. Β She was so hungry though!! I also fed her some leftover chicken burrito and a sausage!!!
She was a lovely natured girl. No collar, no id. We called the pound to come and collect her. I might have welled up a bit to put her in the car!!
I hope she finds her home.

This was last weeks dog, Benji:

Happily Benji had a collar and phone number, and we were able to return him directly to the neighbours down the road a bit!

Break time, an ice block and a sit down seemed in order after our emotional parting…

Back to work – Finished cutting and splitting, clean up time.

Messy palings dealt with
Kindling box at back door filled

All the rest of the cut-to-size-but-not-split wood went into our other big kindling box. Job for another day.

A few gardens got a bit of a weed-overhaul by Jeff

Was good to get out into the sun today!

But for now – time to step back into the kitchen and make up part one of the strawberry ice cream I am planning!

Cheers!

  1. Oh my goodness what a sweet puppy! I would’ve welled up too and knowing me the dog would’ve still been here after a half hearted attempt to find the owner! πŸ™‚

Although this is probably why we have 5 rescue dogs and a lazy rescued cat. We’re weak!

It’s 4 degrees F this morning here in Indiana so it’s nice to see the sun (without snow!) and people enjoying being outside!

    1. lol – not weak – total heroes for taking in rescues!! If our fences were better, or our general setup better we would have kept her here.
Overcast here this morning – looks like the weather outdid herself yesterday and can’t hack the pace! haha
      Stay warm!!!

  2. I love your kindling box!! It just gives me the quivers!! Please don’t think im real strange! Just a little!! I have a “thing” about firewood! I think it is a work of art and efficiency!! I love taking pictures of our wood stacks after my husband puts up our winter wood!! We live in Oregon in the suburbs so we are keeping our eyes out constantly for down trees and extra wood everywhere we go! We never have enough kindling!! Your kindling box just did it for me!! Beautiful, nicely done!!

    1. That made me laugh!! Some people get excited over new shoes (never me) and others love well filled kindling boxes! (you and me!!)
Its great you can collect wood/kindling when you can. We love scavaging for free wood/kindling as well. We are out of pine cones so at some point will have to address that issue!!
The old fence burns like a demon!!! πŸ™‚

    1. lol – I am good with the ‘thrown in a box’ approach. But we have so much kindling at the moment I can fit more by being uncharacteristically tidy! πŸ™‚
Must go back down and look at the raspberries and see if there are any more ready πŸ™‚
