Seaweed – And A Lot Of It

New Spuds!!

Was so good to have a few more new potatoes on the plate tonight. Along with home grown salad, some sausages from a local farmย & with some home made sauces…. was a good dinner!

Looks like we might be adding cucumbers to our salads in the near future.

Oh – I don’t have a photo, but I did a batch of strawberry ice-cream. Bliss!! I might have been recently standing at the freezer with a spoon to re-sample it.
I have the ice-cream maker container back in the freezer as I absolutely want to make a lot of this!!

Anyway – Seaweed

Finally the ocean washed up a good section of seaweed so I hooked up the trailer, grabbed all the feed bags I could find and headed on down.

I think I have filled and distributed close to 40 bags today!

First load

The first load I took around to Ruby’s and dumped it all in a big pile so I can go back sometime and start spreading it out over wherever I have weeded.

The second load I took home and mulched everything in sight

The zucchinis and tomatoes got new beds

Snug zucchini

The outside basil and heirloom capsicums (which are all soooo sloooow)
The other outside heirloom capsicums. (The carrots are finally starting to look ok)

I finally got back into the raspberry patch to graze on a couple of berries but also get a bit more newspaper and mulch down. I will need another load of seaweed to complete that job!!!

Hope everyone has a great weeks ending!

Cheers!

    1. Digging for potatoes is the most fun! Its the thrill of discovery!! (not to mention the taste!!) ๐Ÿ™‚ (And they are super easy to grow!)

  1. Hi Lisa,

Do you rinse the seaweed before putting it on your plants as mulch? There is a lot of salt in the seaweed, isn’t there? That wouldn’t be good for the garden, would it.

    Thanks.

    1. Actually no I don’t rinse the seaweed out. I was curious about that too when I first started doing it. My cousins husband who has a degree in something plant related (can’t remember exactly now) said it was fine – probably give it a break after a few years. But salt impact minimal. And since I have been doing it the plants have thrived. There are good nutrients mixed up in seaweed. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Thanks, Lisa. Maybe I would collect some but it is illegal to take anything off a beach almost all along the California coast. Wonder what kind of seaweed you collected in NZ.

        1. We can’t take things out of National Parks (Which include some of the beaches around here) It kind of depends on the local council. Happily here they don’t mind you collecting it.

  2. Lisa,

Your seaweed looks a lot different than the stuff we get on our coastal shores in Oregon. Ours is wide, long, olive green and slimey. Wonder if its good for the garden also. You do get a lot done, missy! I was wondering, when u make your ice cream, what do you use to make it in? Sounds delightful!!!

    1. It sounds like you are describing Kelp (possibly) which is excellent for the garden. I got a bagful and it is EXCELLENT for the garden. I am going to soak it in a bin for a couple of weeks to make ‘kelp juice’ Its the total bomb for vegies! Its revolting out there today so I haven’t gotten outside to do that yet. I think I will have to just suck it up and go get it sorted! ๐Ÿ™‚
Re Ice cream – my parents gave us an ice cream maker last Christmas. I made ice cream without it and it was fine, but the appliance is really good to use. I cook up & chill the ingredients before then putting it into churn in the ice cream maker. I Just ate a bowl and it was sooooo good! ๐Ÿ™‚ Will post recipe tonight

  3. Your Gardens are looking great and producing well already! We received 6 inches of snow today here in north central Massachusetts. Ugh!

    1. Wow – brrrr!! Although yesterday felt like it was heading back to winter!! Sun again today! Yay.
Snow is so pretty. Will have to get to somewhere next winter where there is snow on the ground! Right now I would be happy if it would act like summer!! ๐Ÿ™‚
