Food

I got into the garden today to pick a few things – yay me!

Made up another large pasta mix to feed the hordes and a bit for the last square inch of space in the freezers

The boys made us dinner last night… Okonomiyaki!! Yummo. I don’t think they have ever made it before (the clue to that was someone googling how to cut a cabbage!)
Still… they worked it out and it was fabulous.
If you haven’t had it – its sort of a mix between an omelette and a pancake. We love it. I should remember to make it a little more often… so I bought some cabbage seedlings in the hope that I will get around to planting them!

Back to dinner – Put out some good side salad dishes to go along with the main dishes and got out some of our nice plates too!

The beetroot patch in the garden is going along amazingly well

My asparagus is not dead… I am just ignoring it as it takes so long to take hold. Actually I think it is going along ok

Lettuce is lovely… and I have carpets of parsley!

I made the chooks a couple of chicken cakes… they were very happy indeed.

Sadly we lost Screecher the other day. I think she was just old (since she has been with us since we first got here) For a couple of days she was mopey and not eating, then just died on the second morning. Poor old girl. We miss her – she was so naughty about getting into things she shouldn’t and showing no remorse!! She had a good life though!!
So we are down to 7 birds now. We have plans to get some more but not until we have gone through our string of visitors and upcoming hikes (so end April perhaps)

The boys have one more full day left.
Then Wednesday I have to get up hideously early to get them to the airport. Then almost a full day before our next guests arrive! Will be a speedy housework session followed by me passing out that evening haha

Snap dragons self seeded as I was hoping!

Anyway, I need to get a wriggle on and get to bed!! (and its not even 11pm!! wow!)
Hope your week has started amazingly!

Cheers

  1. Lisa, sorry to hear about Screecher. No matter if you expect it or not, it’s always hard to have an animal friend die. Asparagus, yours looks fantastic! Did you know that if you miss picking a frond, when it starts developing the side growth [looks similar to the original growth from the ground], you can carefully pick it to eat? This size is so easy to pick and place into your mouth, that mine never made it to the house!
Love the cushion of parsley. I did that with curley parsley in my flower garden as an edging until the myrtle took over the flower bed. Talk about aggressive growth! One small twig of plant took over an entire flower bed [4′ x 12′] in 3 years.
Enjoy, we are expecting ANOTHER snow storm here, 6 to 12 inches.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth. Screecher was such a fixture around the place! 🙁
I haven’t tried to eat any of the asparagus yet – I am a bit keen to try but have left it alone because I am a complete asparagus-novice and haven’t really looked anything up to see what I have to do! Thanks for the advice!!
Argh! More snow?? Is that normal at this time of year for you? I thought things might be warming up!
      Snug up!!

      1. Over a week ago, the local newspaper had pics of crocus blooming. Think they were from my front yard! Yes, it is supposed to be getting warmer here but… Ground is completely covered with at least 4 inches of snow with another storm scheduled to hit us next week. I really like winter, but once teased with warmth, sub zero days shoveling have lost their lustre.

        1. I bet your front yard looks amazing! It really is a bit mean to have spring dangled in front of your nose, then buried in snow again! I always think that last little bit of winter/early spring is the hardest time to wait! (I put the fire on tonight!!)

  2. Awe, so sad about Screecher. I remember reading about him way back in the beginning in early posts. Our neighbors dogs chewed their way into our chicken coop a few months ago and ate all but one lucky hen. We lost 6. We were devastated, and still are mourning. On a lighter note, your flower pics are beautiful. I started a little blog if you want to check it out. Don’t expect much, I just thought I would try it. I don’t have Facebook or any social media so I’m not used to doing stuff like this. Keep those pictures coming, it’s cool here so I am living vicariously through your lens. https://thefrugaldribble.wordpress.com

    1. Thanks Jennifer… and how how horrible about the loss of all your girls (bar one) – I’d still be sobbing too. The poor things! Its always hard to lose them, but losing them that way is a horrible blow 🙁
Oh congratulations on starting a blog! I’ll def. go and check it out! Thanks for letting me know about it. I still can’t get emails from either my own blog or Mavis’s – so weird I just think if I start monkeying around with it I will kill a lot more than the email! And annoy myself in the process! haha.
      🙂
