Summer…

Starting on a sad note tonight.
I found Flea dead under the bushes near the raspberries this afternoon.
I am really upset 🙁
Yesterday I fed her some raspberries and told her that was because she was my Favourite Girl.
I don’t know what happened. It could have been a snake bite although we’ve never had that problem in the past. She had also had respiratory issues for quite some time… not super bad… wheezy, but everything else she was trundling along fine with. Eating, healthy weight, keen to dig worms etc.
I’ll miss her so much.
I know its part and parcel of having chickens… but I don’t get used to having to say goodbye.
So, goodbye Flea – thanks for all the laughs you funny little chook! xx

The weather has been amazing… really hot.
I did fit in whipping up a batch of soap… Sweet Meyer Lemon fragrance, along with dried and crushed zest from lemon peel as a scrub and some dried lemon slices on top

I liked the effect.

Ugh… we’ve put this off for so long.
I had to put my foot down and decided to make a concerted effort to start to make sense of this area.

Jeff slashed a lot of the tall grass and weeds down along the fence line as well as building up the burning piles.
I dug up a heap of massive thistles among other weeds

It was super hot so we called it quits before getting sunstroke but it was good to really get our teeth into it.
Lots more to do but seeing the progress makes things seem achievable.

We wont be able to burn anything for quite some time now that its summer. But at least it can be ready.

Something pretty… collecting calendula petals.

Two kilos of raspberries picked yesterday – there is more down there but this took me an hour and I needed to come back up to cook dinner!

I do hope your week has been going well
Cheers (and tears)
xx

A happy traveller through life! Right now living in NW Tasmania with a gorgeous Nurse-Husband, a fool of a Siamese Cat and several chickens. We love our fairly simple lifestyle of growing a lot of what we eat and enjoying the stunning surrounds of our little patch.

  1. I’m so sorry about Flea. I’ve had an number of mine just end up dead for no apparent reason. A friend told me if they eat a small toad frog that it can be fast like that. Not sure if you have those there or not. I have my favorite, Ella, and she is almost 10. It will be a sad day when that happens to her, but I know it could be any time.

  2. So sorry you lost your Flea. It hurts to have to say goodbye to your pets. You are sure making progress on the tree area looking good. Wishing you n Jeff a very holiday season. Love from Georgia

  3. I’m so sorry to hear about Flea. I loved your stories about her. We recently got 6 chickens and I’m already dreading the day. They’re such characters.

    Much love to you both..

    1. Thank-you Emily! Flea was such fun! Oh! You got some chooks!! Its amazing how fond of them you get isn’t it? I hope you really enjoy them. (and spoil them!)

  4. I’m sad to hear about Flea. Our hearts get all caught up in our animal friends and it’s really tough when they go, especially unexpectedly. 😔 That was our cat in February. Had a great day, was his normal perky self, then dropped dead.

I love the progress you’ve made in the tree area. It will be interesting to reimagine that area and see what you do with it. We’re reimagining our possessions. 23 years in the same house and it’s amazing what we’ve collected that not longer serves us and needs to go.

Love the lemon soap… I can almost smell it from here!

    1. Thank-you Pj…Flea will be missed! And I am so sorry to hear about your cat! That would have been a shock. 🙁
Thanks re the area clean up… we’ve been so slow. I have grand ideas that Jeff rolls his eyes at but who knows down the track!!
Ahhh.. decluttering. Sigh. I wish I was better at the whole idea. Maybe work on an epic New Years Resolution>>?? Hmmm
      🙂

  5. So sorry for your loss of Flea, Lisa. I have loved your chicken stories over the years but, Flea stories were the best. You inspired me that this last summer I drove head first into chicken keeping. Out of my first batch of six pullets, I have ended up with three roos. Lucky me. So far everyone is getting along but by next spring I think I will have to let at least two go. Two weeks ago, two of my girls started laying eggs. Becky, my Easter Egger, is being stubborn in the egg-laying department and has not started yet. She is my princess of a chicken. If there is a little bit of snow on the ground she looks at me with disgust and refuses to come out of the run. Again, so sorry for your loss. Animals are great to have around and so hard to let go once they grab your heart.

    1. Thank-you Renee… Flea was a funny little chook. So comfortable about strolling inside to pinch Pips dinner!
And wow!! You got chooks!!! How exciting! I love how you’ve got a princess in there! We’ve never regretted getting the chickens. Overall they’ve been an asset to the family… even though when they go its hard.
But while we have them they get to live the good life!! 🙂

    1. Thank-you Cindy.. I am really missing her. She always wanted to be in my pocket to see what I was up to!
      Enjoy your winter!!
