Hothouse Rescue

Hello!
My grand plan of slothing is still not quite coming to fruition! Still… I am enjoying a few days at home and not travelling so much each day for a change!

I made a nice big batch of pickled beetroot! So happy to be stocked up again!
Poor Jeff – he finds the smell of that cooking quite hard to take. I must admit it does get eye watering in the kitchen while its simmering!

Anyway, I promised myself at least one big garden task to knock on the head today – and the hothouse seemed like a good place to start.
I literally had to begin at the doorway and slowly work my way in.
I pulled out a lot more tomatoes and tied up the more promising ones.
I also pulled out dozens of strawberry runners!

Have no clue where to plant them. Hoping they can live in this tray until I am done with visitors.
I also found a lot of hiding cucumbers! I was going to pull all the plants out but relented and left some there that looked like they were flowering again. I did thin it out, cut back some of the leaves and vines – so we shall see.
These old cucumbers will be great to collect seeds from. (oh.. and one failed rock melon)

At least I can get into the hothouse now without doing some complicated twisting dance through the greenery!

The whitefly has taken hold again so I will need to get back in there daily with my spray to calm them down again.

Finished off the night with a lovely dinner that included my favourite stuffed tomatoes!

Cheers!

  1. Garden is looking great! what do you use for your whiteflies? i get them on my tomatoes every summer- I have a plot in a community garden and they spread fast.

    1. Thanks Laura!
Re whitefly – I will write the recipe up that I have used in a post soon for you. It seems to work really well although I got busy and didn’t keep repeating the applications… so I have to get onto it again. Yes… they do spread alarmingly fast!!!

  2. Lisa, YOur tomatoes look yummy. Have you posted the recipe? I seem to recall that I had read it. Need to make a note for this summer.
    Love, love, love your pictures!
    Thanks for sharing, karen

    1. Hi Karen!! Flat out today!! I am allowing a 30 minute sit down… 7 minutes left! haha
Oh yes… those tomatoes are my total fav! I might do another post on them (how to) but basically cut your tomatoes in half (not through stem through centre) so you can scoop out the middles and have little cases.
Wizz up the pulp and mix in breadcrumbs (I guess the amount… just so end mix not too sloppy) and fresh chopped herbs (I am using oregano, thyme, parsley and basil) also a sprinkle of garlic salt.
Scoop the mixture back into the tomato cases.
Top with a smear of butter – or some grated cheese
Five minutes under the grill and they are done! Easy peasy!
