Another Mystery

Hi!! I was going to work on some Overland photos for tonight but…. my clunky old computer is not really in the mood. I’ll try to do some tomorrow after its had a little rest!
I am still lollygagging my way through my days blissfully unaware of time or dates. Its all very nice until –
I did it again!! I went shopping on the day before Good Friday!!! I am such an idiot and will never learn! No carparks within cooee of the supermarket (you know, in tiny Wynyard)
A supermarket employee walking towards me while I was on my way in just said ‘run for your life’ haha
My shopping was just the usual stuff. Everyone else had one or two shopping carts full – like they were prepping for a zombie apocalypse not one day of the shops being closed. Madness.

Unfortunately I don’t remember Easter dates so well. We don’t normally do anything over the Easter weekend unless someone is visiting and because the dates change every year I don’t remember. Plus, since Easter eggs and hot cross buns have been out since the first week after Christmas – its easy to just accept it as normal πŸ˜€ Oh well

So…. anyway, here are some photos of our large hole in the ground!
Our cousin Beau dropped in after work yesterday and wanted to check out our ‘not-septic’

You might remember I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about this.
Jeff took the plate off what we thought was the septic tank to check it out and just found this massive hole!! Its nearly 3.5mts deep (11 ft)
Its also really wide!!
You can see some rebar sticking out of the sides and the small pipe that trails in goes nowhere.

Beau was pretty keen to go down but I told him to come back earlier another day when it wasn’t raining. I’d put the extension ladder in and pack him a sandwich.
He did spy an electrical outlet under the slab that we hadn’t spotted!! It was making me kinda nervous him leaning into the hole… it wouldn’t be a nice landing if he toppled in!!

So… what was it? A well? !! Tempting to fill it up and remove the slab since its really serving no purpose.
And where does our poo go??? haha This is the question isn’t it??
All our waste water from the house has to go somewhere!! I find it odd that its not obvious or marked!

Anyway – clearly hitting rock bottom (soil bottom) with my posts now that I am just showing you a big hole in our yard!!
Perhaps I’ll deliver on the Overland Adventure photos tomorrow!!
Have a wonderful Easter Weekend everyone!!
Cheers!

  1. I have no idea what your mystery hole might be, but I have never seen a septic tank location marked here in the US. They are usually buried below ground level and covered over with dirt and grass. We don’t know where ours is but sometimes the grass will be extra green a certain spot so we assume its near that area.

    1. I actually don’t know anything about the normal septic tank procedure here πŸ˜€ We just made assumptions. Beau said theirs was buried under the lawn too with no marker, but at least his dad knows where it is!! Hopefully we don’t have to find it or worse… find it by accident! πŸ˜€ Thanks for the note! Glad to know we aren’t the only ones who don’t know where it is!! πŸ˜€ Have a lovely Easter Weekend!

  2. Do you think it’s a cistern? We have one that is similar at our barn. It’s like what you have, dry, but I think it was originally fed by rainwater off the barn roof gutters. The electric outlet used to run a pump to put water in the trough for the livestock. We have a house in town that also has one, but it has been filled in with dirt and debris over the years.

    1. Something for water is the only thing we can think of at the moment. We just thought it was quite wide – and not deep enough to get to water. But I don’t know! The bore down the back had to go down 120ft to hit water. Will be interesting to see if it fills up at all over winter. Thanks for the input and information about what you have thats comparable. We’ll probably have to talk to some of the old timers in the area and see what they think… or our plumber πŸ˜€
