Looking for Colour on a Gloomy Day

Fuchsia

It’s getting harder to find the little splashes of colour as the weather gets colder. Spring & Summer is a mass of colour. Now I am having to work harder at finding the leftover flowers.

So in between rainfalls, feeding chickens, stocking up on wood & forgetting to put raspberries in my banana-raspberry loaf, I went and took some photos of what colour I could find.

The Salvia is fading, but still pretty.

The middle part of the Protea flower has gone fuzzy

The plant that produced the little fat red chillies has just started re-flowering and fruiting again!

Will I be able to make another batch of sweet chilli sauce?

There are other chillies – not many, but a few here and there

I really don’t know what this eggplant flower thinks its doing. The plant did absolutely nothing all year, now it wants to flower??

Eggplant – very late bloomer!

I ate these

More cucumbers up and coming!

This plant won’t quit – happily

I don’t know what this is.

My fennel has popped up again all over the place! I love the fresh green, spindly ‘leaves’ and yellow flowers. Eating a whole little flower-head bunch is quite an aniseed shock!

There are a few Hebe’s around the place. Mostly all finished flowering.

Roll on Friday huh?

Cheers!

A happy traveller through life! Right now living in NW Tasmania with a gorgeous Nurse-Husband, a fool of a Siamese Cat and several chickens. We love our fairly simple lifestyle of growing a lot of what we eat and enjoying the stunning surrounds of our little patch.

  1. I would love to visit Tasmania one day. Looks so interesting and beautiful there. I don’t think I have as much energy as you do though. Must be all the gorgeous fresh veggies in your diet.We are having spring here in Mississippi so I have planted a few things and am hoping for the best. The temperature here will be in the 80’s next week. It intrigues me that you are about to have winter there. I love all things Ruby! She is so awesome to read about. I love the little glimpse of the past we get to experience through you both. I also love learning from you both. I’m saving my butter wrappers now! Continue your work because it’s definatly a good read.

    1. Hi!
I hope you do make it down here one day! (Summer – make it Summer!! 😀 ) I like it that my blog introduces Tasmania around the world a little bit further. Its worth a visit.
Lucky you being at the start of the season!! What do you have in the ground?
Re butter wrappers – things like that are just so ‘par for the course’ with Ruby. When I see it I think ‘duh!! So obvious! Why wasn’t I doing that before??’ 🙂
      Thank-you for reading!!

      1. I don’t garden as much as you do but we do have tomatoes, zucchini squash, and some red and yellow bell peppers planted. I am slowly going to add more as you are making me ashamed of my lazy self, lol. I frequent the local farmers market and wish you were there so I could purchase some red pepper jelly! Maybe I will give it go myself one day.

        1. Just a little secret – My garden & soil honestly do a great job of making me look good! 😀 Yes, I do put some work into the garden, but its certainly not all life consuming! I think its good to add a little bit here and there. Then it doesn’t seem crazy if you go mad all at once! 🙂 Do you put in potatoes? I LOVE digging up potatoes.
Red pepper jelly? Now that is something I have never tried! I am intrigued!!

          1. Oh, I just realized you make red pepper sauce not jelly. Here in the southern US we pretty commonly make red pepper jelly. My favorite way to serve is on a block of cream cheese with some crackers. You should try it since you have a lot of peppers. I know your sauce has to be delightful. I do not plant potatoes, as I don’t have a lot of space in my yard. We live on a peninsula with the lake all the way around us and not much acreage. I’m thinking about adding more. Just don’t want to get overwhelmed because we own a business and aren’t home much. I planted carrots, which are supposed to be easy, and they died. My soil is kinda bad I think. If you serve a plate of red pepper jelly on a block of cream cheese with crackers for customers to sample, you will certainly sell all you make.

          2. lol I am just translating all the bits in my head and came up with Red Pepper = chilli. (the hot stuff or red capsicum??) Jelly = Jam !! 😀 I actually have made chilli jam before and it was really popular. And I TOTALLY agree about it going on cream cheese and crackers! Soooo good! I have only been making the sweet chilli sauce because it sells better, we eat more of it at home and I had limited chillies! (it looks a lot but it takes so many to get up to 300 grams!)
I have seen a lot of ways to grow potatoes in pots, bags etc and ways that go up rather than out. I was thinking today I would like to try some different methods next season. We are really fond of potatoes in this household! I find potatoes (if you have the space) really easy. It is best to have plants in that are mostly self sufficient if you are not home a lot. I have had mixed success with carrots – plus they take time to thin out etc…
I think summer is not complete without tomatoes tho! 😀
