Whitewashing The Chicken Coop!

dsc_3079

Look what finally bloomed today!! Thought it would be nicer to start with an image of that rather than my grotty chicken coop!

It was really past time to clean it out – so after running about with several errands in town, I got home and into the gardening clothes to make a start.

dsc_3046
Blah!

Safety first – all that chook-poo dust and following using lime, best find a mask…

dsc_3060
I have been dying for a reason to use this! (Yeah – I amuse myself)

Took a bit of digging and scraping to get the coop back to some semblance of reasonable. The main compost got a boost of poo & hay!

dsc_3048

The whitewash is easy to make – one part lime to two parts water. Apparently you can put salt in it too, but I didn’t bother.

dsc_3051

It goes on really thin – its amazing how much it whitens when dry!

dsc_3053

dsc_3054
Door, not done, wall done but not dry
dsc_3071
Door and wall done and dry!! Difference!
dsc_3059
A work in progress… but I didn’t finish the whitewashing today

Even though I still have more to do, at least its been cleaned out. The whitewash helps kill mites and other bugs. I put a load of fresh hay in – it took the chickens a couple of hours but they had kicked half of it out the door by the time I went to lock them up!! Little snots!

dsc_3062
Much improved

I like adding fresh herbs to the coop and nest when I have lots.

dsc_3064

dsc_3069

dsc_3066
Like a herb potpourri

Jeff said its like we are pre-seasoning them! 😀

Ruby told me she got into trouble for whitewashing the dunny (toilet) when she was a young teenager. Apparently painting it bright white was a no-no as going to the loo was all very hush hush in those days – the toilet out the back needed to be discreet!

dsc_3072

Anyway, it was messy and fun and the chooks looked fabulous tonight up on their roost – all the black ones standing out beautifully against the white backdrop! Will have to take a snap of them tomorrow!

Hope you have had a great day too!

Cheers

Odds & Sods

dsc_2983
Chooks laying well!

Lucky Jeff trotted back off to work tonight – armed with 4 dozen eggs and a big slice of cake 🙂

Our chooks are certainly pulling their weight well!

Jeff had some old bait in the freezer that he thought he would try out on the chickens – was funny, first they crowded around fast to see

dsc_2971

dsc_2972

Then they all kinda stepped back in horror and suspicion! A  braver one eventually gave them a bit of a pecking, but then spent five minutes rubbing her beak on the ground in disgust!

dsc_2974

I suspect the local crows weren’t as fussy as our girls!

I went off into town today – figured I was better away from the house, then I wouldn’t be tempted to be doing things in the garden. My back really isn’t playing the game. I need to remember I am in my mid 40’s not mid 20’s and somehow all the structural bits don’t play nice when you overdo things! 🙂

There must have been a big car rally over at Stanley or Smithton today – so many great old vehicles rumbled past us today!

dsc_2979

dsc_2980
Cheery waves from everyone that went by too!

OK – I did a teeny bit of gardening – one of the tomatoes in the hothouse had big enough laterals to pinch off

dsc_2965

So I popped them in a glass to watch the roots form (I like that bit!)

dsc_2969
Working on some free tomato plants

Some of you expressed interest in the calendar I was getting printed. I finally sorted out costs/postage blah blah. You can view the calendar here.
The cost is $16 plus postage. USA & Canada is $8, within Australia $3.  Just leave me a message if interested (no pressure tho! lol) and I will send you an email to organise it.

Have a wonderful start to the new week!

Cheers

Gardening With Chickens!

dsc_1761
The chooks had the best day!

While I wouldn’t have classed today as a beautiful spring day… the wind was absent and so was the rain – it was just cool (ish) and overcast.

We still pulled on our gardening clothes and made a really good start in the bottom vegie patch

dsc_1752
A full winter of neglect
dsc_1754
There was no weed mat put down under the bean arch and it certainly shows

We pulled out the rest of the broccoli and the chickens made a feast of it!

dsc_1756

We left the gate open and one by one they all eventually found their way in – mostly I would have two or three waiting for every spade full to turn and in they would dive for worms or other bugs!!  Our chooks must have been full-to-busting today!

dsc_1757
Even one in the wheelbarrow!!

The bane of the garden in this area is twitch. It grows these long ropey roots that go EVERYWHERE!!

dsc_1767

We are still also digging up weird things

dsc_1763
A nail, a marble, a small hammer like thing, a gadget, and probably part of a horseshoe…

We got through most of the area today – once we have finished that off we will re do the fences and probably take out the middle fence. Once chicken-proofed, we can plant!

dsc_1764
Looking a million times better

In Seed-News, I was pleased to see that a corn seedling had broken through the soil! I wasn’t sure about planting out my collected seed, but if most germinate in this pot, then I will be more confident of planting them out in the new corn patch

dsc_1774

Excited to see some basil peeping up as well…

dsc_1768
tiny tiny
dsc_1775
Cucumber just breaking through!

My sister, Michelle, just gave me these heirloom tomato seeds… I am pretty excited to try them out so I put in plenty today…. and because my track record with tomatoes from seed is abysmal, I have put in a lot and will nurture them inside to give them the best chance!

dsc_1707
Beefsteak tomatoes!
dsc_1776
This should be enough??

By the time we wound up for the evening, I was a bit of a mess.

That hot shower was pretty divine!

Cheers!

Back to the Garden

DSC_9539
Grotty me

I spent quite a lovely afternoon scratching about the garden. I had domestic overload yesterday, so I was pretty keen to get outside.

As I mentioned a few days back, the main vegetable patch is a bit over run and weedy and I was pretty keen to start sorting it out.

DSC_9505

I really didn’t get very far before the weather set in and got colder and damper than I was happy being – and the weeding here is pretty slow as there are so many tiny little weeds to fiddle about with!

DSC_9506
I suppose its a start!

I kept having to catch and throw chickens over the fence that were getting into the lower garden somehow! I need to revamp my fences ASAP

DSC_9513

DSC_9512
The one with the silly look on her face is the one that keeps getting into the vegetable garden!

DSC_9510

I noticed I was lacking a few chickens during the bread frenzy – I stuck my head in the coop to see 4 of them trying to lay an egg in the same nesting box! Idiots! (Two jumped down straight away before I could get the photo as they spied the bread!)

DSC_9507

Since I was already filthy, I didn’t want to quit my gardening day, so I figured clearing out the hothouse was a good move

DSC_9519

The tangle of dead tomato bush on the right bottom is a plant that has been growing for over 18 months! I had taken a lateral at the end of a season, kept it alive over winter, then replanted it in the hothouse. Amazing. (By the way I managed to kill ALL the laterals I was trying to winter this year!!)

DSC_9520

After I cleared things up, weeded and dug, I put some of the compost that we got from the local nursery around all the remaining plants.

DSC_9528
So much better

I sadly picked my last tomatoes. Now the long wait until the next season gets underway (I won’t buy shop tomatoes anymore. We just go without for a while. Too expensive for no flavour.)

DSC_9532
Last tomatoes and a chilli!
DSC_9522
Before I picked it…

I found a bag of bulbs that were desperately trying to grow! Poor things.

DSC_9524

I shoved them in the little garden behind the hothouse, so its up to them now.

DSC_9535
I know its early… but these are what I want in the old strawberry patch.. so starting a few in the hothouse
DSC_9536
I have also started a bunch of cos lettuce (this is my saved seed)

More blossoms everyday are starting to show on the beautiful old cherry plum trees

Hope your Sunday was/is brilliant!

More Jam, More Wood & More Rain

DSC_8871

Lucky me! My cousin, Leonie, dropped in today to catch up. I had some photos of her daughter to give her and she gave me a box of mince, some lemons and a huge bag of kiwi fruit!! Going to have to look up a scrumptious recipe for those – Kiwi/pineapple Jam! mmmm

DSC_8808

Cousin Jeff had dropped in some more wood on Sunday – then before I had a chance to do anything more about it, he was back today with the second load today

DSC_8857

I am going to have to get my skates on and get this stacked, as the third load could possibly arrive Friday!!

DSC_8848

Right now its half out in the elements getting severely rained upon!

The yard gets pretty churned up by the heavily loaded ute, but that’s not saying much as I practically bog the wheelbarrow on my way up to the house these days!

DSC_8851

I am trying to work my way through the containers of produce in the freezer. I thawed out a 4 litre container of Ruby’s plums with the plan to make more jam.

new plum
Ruby’s beautiful plum tree in spring

It took an eon to get the pips out and mooley it into pulp!!

DSC_8840
Pips and skins gone

House smelled rather nice during the process

DSC_8863

I only cooked half – three pounds worth – I find if I try to cook bigger batches it takes 5 times as long and wont set properly! This lot was fairly speedy – I’ll do the rest tomorrow.

DSC_8869
I had some on toast and am pretty happy with it!

The chickens are still laying well – although I wouldn’t blame them if they went on strike! Trying to keep them happy with warm meals every other day.

Getting Outside

DSC_8480
Fresh Greens for the Girls

Hello! Midweek already!

It started off lovely and sunny today… had a minor lapse early afternoon, then fined up again! All in all not too bad!

It was good to get out and do ‘this and that’

Thought the chooks would like some fresh greens

DSC_8481
Anticipation

Then they all stood around, clearly asking where the bacon was?

DSC_8483
Too healthy

I left them to it and went to collect the eggs, only to turn around and find the whole squadron had followed me to the coop -still looking for bacon or hot mash no doubt!

DSC_8488
I hadn’t collected the eggs for a couple of days!

I am pleased to report that when I returned later in the day, all their green snacks had gone! Good girls!

DSC_8466

Time to finish mulching the rest of the salvia! It was easier this time as it was drier and whizzed through rather nicely

DSC_8469
Its like potpourri

I was also keeping an eye on the weather – the rain was creeping slowly closer

DSC_8467
Despite lack of sun, the breeze was helpful

I fed the worms too… some of the peelings that the chickens tend to ignore and eggshells and general grotty bits I put in the Gee Whizzer and put the slop into the compost.

DSC_8458
Pretty worm food
DSC_8477
Surviving…

The chickens did get into this and now the broccoli looks kinda bedraggled

DSC_8478
Doing its very best!

DSC_8476

DSC_8475

Even a fragment of a rainbow today!

DSC_8489

Things are going well in the hothouse for this time of year

DSC_8491

DSC_8492

I do think it may be time to remove the last tomato plants… (maybe)

DSC_8490
Just a few tomatoes left

I even have some accidental celery! I left it in a pot outside the hothouse door and it has rooted into the ground and is looking really quite good!

DSC_8497

Having done all my yard tasks, brought up some barrow loads of wood, watered the hothouse plants etc, I took my rake and headed to the beach…

DSC_8699
Rake & Me, hanging out at Fossil Bluff

I know – why be normal??

I was doing an elaborate wedding message in time-lapse and figured that taking a rake to smooth the sand would be useful.

I get a lot of weird looks when I go to Fossil Bluff lately!

Have an awesome day everyone!

Cheers!

Yard Work

DSC_7996

It wasn’t too bad out there today! Both Jeff and I got out there to get into some tasks before the rain sets in from now! (Yes and even another load of laundry done and dried! I am on a roll)(Lets not talk about the folding ok?)

I finished pruning off another bush while Jeff got into the lawn

DSC_7981
Was a bit long

DSC_7982

While all the mowing and whipper-snippering is going on, the gates are open and the fences down – its heaven for the chooks as they can free range a little further than normal. Its very exciting for them!

DSC_7999

Pip also got dragged out from under the doona to get a little sunshine as well

DSC_7986

Although his idea of ‘helping’ is to sit on my shoulders while I am trying to prune – wasn’t what I had in mind!

DSC_7991

I got about halfway through the Salvia clippings, putting them through the little mulcher

DSC_8001

DSC_8011

They actually looked quite pretty all chopped up

DSC_8008

I started filling up the second of my new composts with the clippings and chippings!

DSC_8014

DSC_8016
Note to self – must add worms

I did notice the first bin was warmer and showing condensation on the inside of the lid! I figure this is a good sign

DSC_8015

Jeff had moved on from the lawn and was making a dent in all the rocks and gravel that had washed down the backyard in the flood and was starting to reconstruct the path. I was getting chilly, so I left the mulcher and started raking gravel.

DSC_8006

Its a bit less of a free fall going down this path now, and starting to look a little tidier down the back

DSC_8017

In the hothouse, one of the smallest broccoli plants is actually showing a tiny broccoli starting!

DSC_8019

These are looking healthy, but they could still turn out to be cabbages…

DSC_8020

Its so nice to look back after a day outside and see things looking markedly better!

DSC_8022

Time for a snuggle down in bed with a good book!

Hope your day was great!

DSC_7993
Its a good life!!

Cheers

Rural Tasks

DSC_7795
Back to her adventurous self today!

Well… Screecher was clearly feeling better, because I found her wandering, bold as brass, up near the house! No idea how she got out. All the other girls were where they were meant to be!

DSC_7803
Snack time
DSC_7802
The eggs get really mucky in winter!
DSC_7801
There is one ‘working’ nest, the other two look like this! Little scruffers!

The fire was well overdue for a clean out – so I got my bucket and got to work

DSC_7792

DSC_7793
Full!

I took the ashes down and threw them in the main compost. I decided against putting them in the new ones, because my best friend told me how she did that and the ashes weren’t quite cold and set her compost bin on fire!! I decided to err on the side of caution!!

DSC_7796
This is NOT a job for a windy day!! (Its not so fabulous to step outside and get a face full of ashes!!)

Now our fire is beautiful again

DSC_7837
Makes winter worthwhile!

Speaking of composting things, I decided to chuck the extra food scraps that the spoiled chickens ignore into the Gee Whizzer and get them nice and fine to hurry the composting along

DSC_7838

So I went and fed the worms

DSC_7840
If I am going to be honest, it looks like someone threw up in here….

A lot of my bulbs and rhizomes are coming up already. I feel its a bit early since we only just started the second month of winter!

DSC_7811

DSC_7810
Found these on top of the soil!! Will relocate to new home

The Day lilies are looking good!

DSC_7805

Lots of iris well on their way too

DSC_7807

My Protea is looking so nice at the moment. Plenty of big bold flowers!

DSC_7809
Bud

DSC_7808

The photo below was taken the day after our flood. Its a bit hard to see, but the garden outlined by the driftwood on left has half of the mulch washed away thanks to the flood

DSC_5959
Newspaper showing where mulch should be!

I was impressed to see all the dirt smoothed and covered over yesterday. I thought my fabulous husband had done a bit of random gardening for me. Turned out it was the chickens!! On their accidental day out yesterday they must have had a lovely industrious time in that garden!! (Although I suspect all my worms have long gone!!)

DSC_7833
A good job done by the chickens!!

I finished off my day by making sausages in pineapple gravy, draped over mashed potato and fresh broccoli for dinner…. and a chocolate self saucing pudding for dessert. 🙂 Yum

DSC_7843
This was soooo good!

Hope your weekend has gone fantastically well!

Cheers!

Chook Poo

OK – just kidding. I am not going to write a whole post about chook poo! 🙂

DSC_7180

The poor chickens. Their coop was a bit horrible. We had trouble finding hay recently- of all things in the country to have difficulty finding mind you!! Bad weather, bad timing etc. Finally picked up a couple of bags of chopped hay off my favourite vendor down at the local markets. Lucky I went early as he said there is no more for a long while!!

DSC_7183
A few wheelbarrow loads off to the compost! We put this lot in the established compost – more room.

We threw some lime about – helps with mites and lice (And apparently odours) then made the whole coop lovely and fluffy with new hay.

Of course – five minutes later of unsupervised chickens had them kicking it out the door already!!

DSC_7203
They will have some fun creating new nests

Once the weather changes back to not horrible I am going to whitewash the whole coop!!! I will feel like I am living in an Enid Blyton book!!

The weather was pretty nice for most of the day – that is, we had gorgeous sunshine until the washing went out and we started in the garden! 😀

DSC_7192
Some of the canes were a bit wonky…

So, we got to and dug a couple of small rows for the raspberries – extending the existing ones.

The chickens were most helpful (not)

DSC_7197

Every time I dug a hole, someone got in it, in a frantic worm-search and another would kick all my dirt all over the place!!

DSC_7198

Despite all the feathery ‘help’ we got the canes in. Hoping they are happy about their small move and produce some fruit this upcoming season.

DSC_7199

There was still enough daylight left to get back into the duck-yard and try to finish up the weeding we started last week

DSC_7205

The chickens weren’t our only company – I looked up to suddenly see this lot staring at me!!

DSC_7212
So funny to be in your little weeding world and look up into the faces of a couple of calves!!

Right on dusk, Cousin Jeff pulled up at the gate with a load of firewood!!!

We had seen his wife at the local school market that we went to this morning and asked if she could ask Jeff if he has some more dry wood – the last lot is still a bit heavy, so we need to mix it in with drier wood and we were running short of the older stuff.

I didn’t say it was THAT much of an emergency!! 😀

DSC_7215

DSC_7217
Lucky us – Spiderman delivers our wood!! (Not that you can really see Jeff’s son’s costume, but trust me… its cool!)

So – I know what I will be doing with the non-rainy days this week!!

DSC_7220
Going to have to get this stacked ASAP before it gets totally rained on

Night had pretty much fallen by the time Jeff had unloaded the wood. I did take the time to go back to my ‘garden’ to admire it. Or stand there and imagine what will be next season!!!

DSC_7225

Hope everyone has had a lovely start to their weekends!

Cheers!

DSC_7187
The fact that Tasmanian weather can never make up its mind, means we get a lot of rainbows!

Day of Worms

DSC_6690
Fancy new compost bins!

Hello! How is everyone’s weekend so far?

Lucky me! My fabulous husband went online shopping and bought me a surprise… two surprises actually! Compost bins!

He figured it would take too long to get around to building more and found these!

DSC_6691

Luckily I collect weird things, like bags of chicken poo, so I was able to 3/4 fill one already with the hay/chicken poo mix from cleaning the chicken coop.

DSC_6694
My chicken poo collection.

I have also dumped in a lot of worms, transported mostly from the original compost.

Looking forward to filling them up with more scraps & mulch etc.

It really was a fabulous day out there! When Tassie weather is on form, its gorgeous! I was in a t-shirt all day.

Jeff had begun to dig and weed the duck yard (we have never actually HAD ducks, but because this yard originally had a pond area, we figured ducks must have lived here!)

DSC_6693

The weeds really had taken over as its not an area we use – its a chicken yard really.

DSC_6695
I have plans for those big rocks!!
DSC_6702
Whatever this is, its growing very well. Happily it wasn’t too hard to dig up – just a lot of it.

Screecher, our one remaining original chicken, totally knows the ropes when it comes to us digging in the garden… snacks galore!

DSC_6697
Sucking back worms like spaghetti!

The other girls got in on the act too

DSC_6701
Poor worms

I thought it would be good for Pip to be outside for a change. He has spent far too many hours buried under the doona, the lazy cat!

DSC_6703
Seeking entry into the back paddock!
DSC_6709
I think cats also photosynthesise!

Funny to watch one of the new chickens trying to get brave enough to get closer to check out what kind of weird bird he was!

DSC_6712
She kept clucking at him as well!

We made quite a lot of progress over the afternoon, along with several chooks coming in to ‘help’ dig

DSC_6725
Jeff & the Team

Rewards were plentiful!

DSC_6723

DSC_6721

I am pretty sure all the chooks had a great afternoon! So much enthusiastic scratching and scoffing of worms!

DSC_6730
Scratch, scratch, peck peck
DSC_6727
Once the new girls got the hang of what was going on, they were quite bold in the worm catching arena!
DSC_6731
On overtime now.

The sun was gone, moon had risen, about time to call it a day!

DSC_6732
Last barrow load
DSC_6733
Not quite a full moon yet

Felt so good to be out in the garden again getting some work done!

DSC_6736
Disposed of several of these today!

So pleased with todays work!!

DSC_6739

I should be able to finish off the last bit tomorrow afternoon if the weather plays nice again.

We are going to block the chickens access to this area next season and this lovely big space is destined to be one of my new vegetable gardens!

I figured I could have a good patch of corn, and also put the space hungry pumpkins and zucchinis in this area. Also along the taller fence to the right of the below image, I could plant a row of runner beans that can climb up the fence and do their thing.

I also plan to boarder as much of it as possible with marigolds!

DSC_6738
Beautiful space!

I totally cannot wait for spring!
