Potato Day

Self seeded potato haul

Hello! Hope your weekends have started in fine style!
We got to the potatoes today – really its the best part of the season. The thrill of discovery!

All looking quite woebegone!

The soil wasn’t dry but seemed more compacted than normal. Took a bit of effort to dig into it – we mostly used the hand trowels so we didn’t massacre too many spuds

Done for the day! I won’t say all dug up because you NEVER get them all!

Time to sort…

Its a little uncharacteristically OCD of me to sort the potatoes into sizes… but I hate scruffing through little potatoes trying to find bigger ones when I am cooking. I’ll just wash and steam the smaller ones, but if I am doing mashed potatoes I have zero interest in standing about all night trying to peel 30 tiny potatoes. Nope!

I line boxes with newspaper and also layer with newspaper

Not too many weird ones this season

Overall not a bad haul… like everything else, not as good as last season. But plenty to keep us going for a while.

One box will live in the pantry and the other three wait their turn out in the shed!

Time for me to go wash the red dirt off! We are planning to go out to the movies – best have a scrub up!

Cheers

    1. Thanks Judy! Guess that’s a few months worth! 🙂 Just so much fun digging and a little disappointing when we ran out of plants to dig! 🙂

  1. Lisa, am amazed at the color of your soil! From where I live, that color means clay and bricks and hard growing medium requiring lots of compost, shredded leaves and some sand to break up the soil clods.
May I suggest a very New England style potato recipe? Salt Potatoes. Use your little ones [clean with jackets on] and boil in very salted water. When cooked, just pull out the potatoes and slather on butter. In our household, doesn’t matter how many I cook this way, there rarely are any leftovers.

    1. Hi Elizabeth! Yes, we are lucky to have that soil… its beautiful.
I like the sound of your New England style potatoes! Nice and easy. I’ll give it a go and report back 🙂 Thank-you!

  2. Hey Lisa!
I am toying with trying potatoes just for fun, but I am wondering about long term storage if they go well.
How long do the potatoes keep for you in the boxes? What is the ambient temperature where you have them stored?

    1. Hi Cari – so sorry – your message ended up in my ‘trash folder’ and have no idea how!! I never look in there because I assumes its me just deleting my ‘pingbacks’
So this is a very late reply!
Definitely grow potatoes! They keep well for months. I think we eat our own for about 9 months of the year. In the last few months I have to get into the boxes and knock off the shoots. I think if they are stored in a cooler area they wouldn’t sprout as much. The bulk I keep in the shed – our temps don’t go much below 0 deg C. The lot I am using are in the pantry in the kitchen – not as warm as the rest of the house. I have no idea the temperatures in there tho!
I store them in cardboard boxes with layers of newspaper between them.
I hope you give them a go! Noting like your own potatoes and so much fun digging! 🙂

    1. The only time I peel potatoes is when I mash them. We baked them last night (in their jackets) oh sooooo goooood !! 🙂
ooooo – haven’t made a potato salad in a while! Should get onto that! Yum!

  3. I feel like potatoes are at the heart of your blog! Love your photos. May I suggest hasselback style potatoes. I just try to get my slices fairly thin taking care not to cut clear through the bottoms by supporting them on each side with two wooden spoons. Then I slather skin with coconut oil, or whatever oil/butter your have on hand, sprinkle salt on the peels then bake til crispy outside yet soft inside. I have also put fresh rosemary in and around them while baking which is delightful. You can also stuff with cheese, bacon, peppers or whatever your have on hand but I kinda like them plain.
